Good Morning Mantras to start your day right!
Taking time to plan is something that we all do…sometimes! Some of us do it all the time and couldn’t live without the idea of plans and timeframes and an organised existence. Many of us plan portions of our world, like work schedules or trips away, whilst leaving much to chance. A portion of us leave everything to chance and wend our way through life dealing with things as they come up without a planner or a scheduler in sight!
Me? I am a bit of a planner, a lover of lists and a maker of arrangements but they do tend to be a bit last minute much to the annoyance of others and quite frankly to the bewilderment of myself! For instance, I am currently trying desperately to plan a two-month sabbatical from my house. During lockdown I saw an advert asking for a house sit in my area for July and August 2022. So I replied. Yes yes, of course you can have my home for two months in that far off time of 2022. It won’t be an issue I told myself. I have a campervan and can toddle off in that with the dog for two months.
Two whole entire months?
Madness and as the months have loomed instead of being a brilliant planner and being organised I have stuck my head firmly in the sand and ignored it all until now when I have exactly not-very-long to get sorted, find places to stay, clean the house, organise storage and generally figure out my next two months!!!…no stress here then!
And why, when I could have been super organised and planned and decided and just jolly-well got on with it did I leave it till the very last minute?
So, this got me thinking about other areas of life where I can of leave things to make their own way and it occurred to me that it’s what many of us do in our day-to-day lives when instead we could create some basic small mantras that we start to use to not only ‘plan’ our day but also to set ourselves up for great days!
Here are some I want to share:
*Don’t let the day just happen
When you wake up, perhaps even before you get out of bed, or perhaps whilst in the shower, set some deliberate intentions for the day ahead and ask yourself
‘What do I want this day to feel like?
‘What matters most today?
‘What do I want to celebrate at the end of the day?’
With these questions in mind you can set yourself something to act upon without even having to ‘plan’ things!
* Breathe deeply…feel your heart
Many of us feel tense about the day ahead before we even come out from under the covers. If this happens it’s imperative that you BREATHE! and breathe deeply. Take a few unusually deep breathes and hold the breath for longer than it takes to breathe in. Like this: Big breath in for the count of 5, breathe out slowly for the count of 6 or 7. Do this to open up your lungs to their full capacity by sticking out your tummy. This is an instant relaxant and will help you start your day off in a more relaxed state
*Introduce a when/then rule
Adopting a new habit might be the way forwards. You might already know what that habit could be. Now all you have to do is follow the habit daily and your life will change around…right?! It can however be a wee bit challenging so try using this little tool! Say you want to exercise more, you can boost your chances of doing it by setting the when/then rule: ‘When I have the option of taking the stairs instead of the lift, then I will take the stairs’. Getting into a routine of this can really help your mind to focus on what you want to change.
*Plan ahead
Sounds silly but so many of us simply don’t plan ahead. I find that blocks of time are the only way for me to accomplish just about anything! If I want to write I have to turn off the phone, sit in a quiet space, keep focused and have lots of water to consume. If I don’t do this, if I don’t plan then all that happens is I get distracted by messages and WhatsApp and any other number of contact platforms then I lose the train of thought, get dehydrated as I didn’t drink enough water and low and behold STRESS occurs!!!
