The Healing Power of Giggling: Why a Laugh a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

We’ve all heard the old saying that “laughter is the best medicine,” but did you know there’s real science behind that? Yes, giggling isn’t just something we do when we find something funny—it’s a powerful tool for improving both your mental and physical health. So, if you’ve been feeling stressed, anxious, or just a little out of sorts, it might be time to give yourself a giggle!

As a self-proclaimed laughoteer (yes, that’s a word I’m claiming!) and an advocate for all things giggly, I’ve seen firsthand how a good belly laugh can transform lives. Laughter doesn’t just make you feel good for a few moments; it can change your entire outlook on life, improve your mood, and even help you manage difficult times.

Why Laughter Is the Best Medicine

Laughter isn’t just a fun thing we do—it’s a full-body workout for your brain and emotions. Let me break down the science for you. When you laugh, your body releases a cocktail of feel-good chemicals, including serotonin (the happy hormone) and endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers). These chemicals give you that wonderful warm, fuzzy feeling that makes everything seem a little brighter.

Not only does laughter release these happy hormones, but it also reduces the levels of cortisol in your body. Cortisol is the stress hormone that causes those awful anxious feelings, so when you laugh, you’re literally chasing away your stress. In fact, studies have shown that people who laugh regularly experience lower levels of anxiety and depression.

And it doesn’t stop there. Laughing can also improve your immune system! Yes, it’s true. Some research suggests that laughing can increase the production of antibodies, boosting your body’s ability to fight off infections. So, next time you feel a cold coming on, maybe what you need is a good comedy show instead of vitamin C!

How Giggling Can Change Your Perspective

When life gets tough, it’s easy to fall into a cycle of negative thinking. When you’re feeling low or anxious, the last thing you want to do is laugh—but that’s exactly when you need it most. One of the magical things about laughter is its ability to shift your perspective. It’s almost like hitting the reset button on your brain.

When you’re in a funk, even the most well-meaning advice can feel useless, and nothing seems to help. That’s when you need to give yourself the gift of a giggle. I’ve had the pleasure of helping people find their laughter during some of the hardest times in their lives—whether they’re battling cancer, dealing with depression, or managing crippling anxiety. And I’ve seen the profound changes that a little laughter can bring.

By giving yourself permission to laugh—really laugh—you’re allowing your body and mind to take a break from the heaviness. And when you do that, you’ll find that you’re much better equipped to deal with whatever challenges life is throwing at you.

Giggling Your Way to Good Health

You don’t need a stand-up comedian to help you find your laugh (though that can certainly help!). Sometimes all it takes is giving yourself the space to giggle. I often tell people in my laughter workshops to just start smiling—even if they don’t feel like it.

It might sound silly, but it works. Try it right now! Turn that frown upside down and give yourself the biggest, cheesiest, wide-mouthed grin you can muster. Show all your teeth, scrunch up your eyes, and feel that smile spread across your face. Now, throw your head back, maybe fling your arms out wide for good measure, and just let out a hearty laugh.

Even if you’re faking it, you’ll probably find yourself giggling in no time. And guess what? Your brain doesn’t know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter! It will still release all those delicious happy chemicals, flooding your body with feel-good vibes.

Laugh More, Live Better

The truth is, laughter is one of the simplest, most effective ways to improve your overall well-being. It doesn’t cost anything, and you can do it just about anywhere. Whether you’re at work, stuck in traffic, or at home, take a moment to find something that makes you laugh, even if it’s just your own silliness.

It might be watching a funny video, reading a hilarious meme, or thinking back on a moment when you laughed so hard you cried. Whatever it is, find that giggle and let it take over.

Laughter doesn’t just make you feel better in the moment—it can help you feel more resilient in the long run. When you laugh, you connect with your inner child, that part of you that knows how to find joy in the little things. And when you find that joy, the world feels like a much lighter, more manageable place.

So, go ahead and give yourself a giggle. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
